VIVAnews - Eighty percent of drug users in Indonesia are men while the remaining 20 percent are women.

The data was obtained from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and rehabilitation centers throughout Indonesia. “Until today, the number is dominated by males,” BNN Public Relations Division Head, Sumirat told VIVAnews.

The contributing factors of drug addictions include poor financial conditions, domestic issues and peer pressure.

Currently, the therapy unit in Bogor is one of the rehabilitation centers used to recover patients from their addiction.

“Right now, there are 200 people from various regions in Indonesia being treated in the unit. The place could accommodate up to 500 people,” Sumirat said.

He also said it only takes a year for a patient to escape the addiction. BNN is employing the methods of pharmacology, social rehabilitation, and religion in their treatment.

Parental guidance is also one of the key factors in the recovery. “But, recovered addicts are not guaranteed to be not repeating what they did in the past. They will be really prone to having a desire to use the drugs again,” he said.
